About
I used art for expressing myself and finding my individuality in school, from this i realised art had to be foremost in my adult life and hopefully my career. So at college i took a GNVQ and AVCE in art & design, which took me to Cardiff where i graduated in 2009, with a Ba Hon in Ceramics.
Work at school level was more about stylizing my drawing techniques and copying what i saw. I was finding myself. When i moved onto college i was inspired by new artists and teachers, i started using new materials and my interest in ceramics was taking off. I found it was a great material to manipulate for me to produce quick explorations. During my degree, drawing was taught in a whole new light, which i loved, it was free, expressive and i loved keeping my sketchbooks. I started getting into scrap booking and my paintings became heavily mixed media pieces with multiple layers of papers, paints and inks.
My ceramic work has always been focused around figurative hand built forms. so throughout my degree i did dabble with other topics but always came back to working with figures. In my second year, i reverted to Islam, and my work took yet another direction. i became fascinated with womanhood, modesty, community and reflection. My new found identity as a practicing Muslim, had made me feel the need to address misconceptions i once had about Islam. Shown through my personal experience i hoped to enlighten the viewer. My senses had been opened up to a whole new variety of colours and texts.
Recently i have been playing around with the idea of identity.
